What is Volusion?

Volusion

Volusion is a US-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) ecommerce platform founded in 1999 by Kevin Sproles and headquartered in Austin, Texas. It gives merchants a hosted online store builder that bundles catalog management, a shopping cart, and payment processing into a single subscription plan.

Over its history Volusion has powered well over 100,000 online stores across a range of tiered hosting plans, from entry-level packages up through higher-tier Business and Prime plans that unlock additional platform features, including store-level API access.

Why connect Volusion to Feedance?

Running a Volusion store usually means keeping product listings, stock levels, and order records in sync with the marketplaces, ad channels, and other systems you sell through. Doing that by hand with manual exports is slow and easy to get wrong, especially as a catalog grows or prices and stock change throughout the day.

Connecting Volusion to Feedance lets you pull that data automatically and turn it into feeds and updates you can act on, without maintaining your own export scripts or re-uploading files every time something changes in your store.

How does Feedance connect to Volusion?

Feedance connects to your Volusion store using the store credentials and permissions you provide when you set up the connection. Once authorized, Feedance communicates with your store on your behalf to retrieve product, inventory, and order information and keep it current in your Feedance account.

You control what is shared: the connection only accesses the store data needed to build and maintain your feeds, and you can review or revoke access from your Feedance account at any time.

What data does Feedance access from Volusion?

Data entityWhat Feedance uses it for
ProductsReads product titles, descriptions, pricing, images, and other catalog attributes to build and update your feeds.
InventoryReads current stock levels so feeds and channel listings reflect accurate availability.
OrdersReads order data to help you track fulfillment-related activity and keep sales channels informed.

Volusion-specific considerations worth knowing

A few aspects of how Volusion is built are worth knowing before you connect it:

  • API access is plan-gated. Volusion documents its store-level API as a feature of its higher-tier Business and Prime hosting plans. Stores on lower-tier plans typically need to upgrade before a third-party connection like Feedance can be authorized.
  • Credentials can expire on Volusion's schedule. Volusion ties API access to store administrator credentials and, per its own PCI-related security guidance, expects merchants to update their admin password periodically. When that happens, any existing connection needs to be re-authorized with the new credentials.
  • The underlying data format is legacy XML. Volusion's native product, order, and customer data interchange is built around XML export/import rather than a modern JSON REST payload, a holdover from the platform's original architecture. This does not change how you use Feedance, but it explains some of the field naming and structure decisions on Volusion's side.

How to connect Volusion with Feedance

  1. Log in to your Feedance account and choose to add a new store connection.
  2. Select Volusion from the list of supported platforms.
  3. Enter your Volusion store details and the credentials Feedance requests to authorize the connection.
  4. Let Feedance run its initial sync to pull in your products, inventory, and orders.
  5. Review the synced data, set up your feed or export rules, and turn on ongoing sync.

How often does your Volusion data sync?

Once connected, Feedance keeps your Volusion data updated on an automated recurring schedule, and you can also trigger a manual sync when you need the latest information right away. This means your feeds reflect recent product, inventory, and order changes without you needing to re-export anything from Volusion yourself.

Volusion feed optimization tips

  1. Keep product titles and descriptions complete and specific in Volusion so they translate into clean, useful feed content.
  2. Assign accurate categories to every product to avoid mismatched or ungrouped listings downstream.
  3. Use clear, high-resolution product images, since image quality carries directly into your feeds.
  4. Keep stock levels current in Volusion so inventory-based feed decisions stay accurate.
  5. Use consistent, unique SKUs or product identifiers to avoid duplicate or mismatched listings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Volusion

  • How does Feedance connect to my Volusion store?

You authorize Feedance with your Volusion store credentials during setup. Once connected, Feedance uses that authorization to read your product, inventory, and order data directly from your store and keep it synced in your Feedance account, without you needing to export files manually.

  • Is there anything specific to Volusion I should know before connecting?

Volusion makes its store-level API available mainly to merchants on its higher-tier Business and Prime hosting plans, so stores on lower-tier plans may need to upgrade first. Also, because Volusion requires periodic admin password changes as part of its security policy, you may occasionally need to re-enter updated credentials in Feedance to keep the connection active.

  • What Volusion data can Feedance read or update?

Feedance works with three types of data from Volusion: products, inventory, and orders. It reads product details like titles, pricing, and images, tracks stock levels, and reads order information. Feedance does not access other store data such as customer records or store settings.

  • How do I keep my Volusion feed current?

Once your store is connected, Feedance syncs your Volusion data on an automated recurring schedule so your feed reflects recent changes. If you need the very latest data immediately, such as after a big price update, you can also run a manual sync from your Feedance account.

  • Why would my Volusion connection stop working after it was previously fine?

The most common reason is a changed Volusion admin password. Volusion's security policy calls for merchants to update their store password periodically, and since API access is tied to those credentials, an old connection will need to be reauthorized with the new password in Feedance.
