It began life in March 2000 in Germany under the name "The Exchange Project" and was renamed osCommerce at the end of 2001, making it one of the earliest open-source shopping cart systems ever released. It is distributed under the GNU General Public License, so merchants download, host, and customize the software themselves rather than paying for a hosted subscription.
