Age group tells advertising platforms which life stage a product is designed for, sent through the g:age_group tag in an XML feed or an age_group column in a CSV feed to Google Shopping and Meta Catalog. Like gender, it's a closed-vocabulary field rather than free text, drawing from a specific set of accepted values — newborn, infant, toddler, kids, and adult — that map to recognizable retail age brackets rather than exact ages. Apparel, footwear, and toy retailers use it to keep a "kids" hoodie from ever appearing in an adult shopper's results, and vice versa.
Google requires age_group on Apparel & Accessories items, and an incorrect or missing value can lead to disapproval or, more damagingly, an item surfacing for the wrong audience entirely — a toddler's shoe shown against an adult search wastes impressions and can even raise brand-safety concerns for the advertiser. Because age_group is one of the attributes Google recognizes as a valid basis for a variant group, it also plays a structural role: a shoe brand selling the same silhouette in a kids' version and an adult version can present both as one listing with an age-based option, but only if age_group is populated correctly on every row. Left blank on a genuinely age-specific product, the field forces a platform to guess from title and category text alone, which is a far less reliable signal than a properly filled attribute.
The five accepted values — newborn (up to 3 months), infant (3–12 months), toddler (1–5 years), kids (5–13 years), and adult — are the only ones Google recognizes, and each has a rough age range associated with it in Google's own documentation rather than a strict cutoff a retailer needs to calculate precisely. Age_group commonly appears alongside gender and size on the same row, and all three, together with color, material, and pattern, make up the full set of attributes Google permits as the basis for grouping variants under one item_group_id. A retailer selling a jacket across kids' and adult sizing ranges would typically vary age_group and size together across the group while keeping color and style constant.

The kids' and adult versions share an item_group_id and gender value but diverge on age_group, size, and price — enough difference for the platform to treat them as related variants rather than the same exact offer.
Age group is the natural companion to gender, since the two together define the demographic a listing is meant for, and it typically shifts in step with size whenever a product line spans kids' and adult ranges on different measurement scales. Whether age_group is even expected on a given item ultimately traces back to its Google Product Category placement, since that's what determines which apparel-specific attributes a listing is required to carry.
