Additional image link is the feed attribute that supplies extra product photos beyond the single required image_link, submitted to Google Merchant Center as one or more <g:additional_image_link> tags and to Meta Catalog as a comma-separated list inside one additional_image_link field. It's optional on every channel, but for categories where shoppers expect multiple angles — apparel, furniture, electronics — skipping it puts a listing at a real disadvantage against competitors showing a full gallery.
<g:additional_image_link>
A shopper who clicks into a Google Shopping listing or a Meta Catalog ad expects to see more than the one thumbnail that got them there — back views, close-ups, in-context shots, packaging. Products that only supply a single image_link tend to convert worse once a buyer reaches the product page, because the gallery is often the last thing standing between interest and a bounce back to search. The field also feeds Google's broader listing quality signals: richer image sets are one of the factors Google associates with higher-performing, more complete listings, and their absence is a common finding in feed audits that explain why a category is underperforming even when price and availability are correct.
Google Merchant Center allows up to ten additional_image_link entries per item, each submitted as its own <g:additional_image_link> element rather than bundled into one tag, and each image must clear the same resolution and content rules that apply to the primary image_link — no duplicate URLs, no watermarks, no promotional overlays beyond what the category allows. Order isn't guaranteed to be preserved exactly as submitted, so merchants shouldn't rely on the first additional image always rendering first in a gallery. Meta Catalog structures the field differently: instead of repeated tags, it takes a single comma-separated string of image URLs in the additional_image_link column, and Meta's published cap runs meaningfully higher than Google's ten-image limit. Neither platform requires the field, and neither will reject an item for omitting it — the cost of skipping it shows up in click-through and conversion metrics rather than in feed disapprovals. That makes it easy to deprioritize during a crunch, even though it's often cheaper to fix than a pricing or identifier problem once the source images already exist.

Additional_image_link is best planned together with image_link, since both draw from the same photo library and fail the same validation checks when a CDN path changes or a shoot gets reshot. For products where even a full still-image gallery doesn't convey enough — furniture that unfolds, apparel with visible movement or texture — the next step up is video_link, which several channels now support alongside the standard image set. All of it ultimately rolls up into listing quality: a feed team auditing why one category underperforms should check image count and resolution before assuming the problem is price or bidding.
