Image link is the feed attribute that tells a shopping channel where to find a product's main photo, submitted to Google Merchant Center as the <g:image_link> tag and to Meta Catalog in a column of the same name. Both platforms treat it as a required field for nearly every offer, since a listing with no resolvable image URL gets disapproved outright rather than shown with a broken thumbnail. The value has to be a direct, publicly reachable link to the image file itself, not a product page or a script that renders the image on load.

Shopping platforms build entire result grids from feed data, so image_link carries as much weight as title or price in whether a shopper clicks through. A dead URL, a redirect chain, or an image blocked by a robots.txt rule doesn't just look bad — it triggers an automatic disapproval that pulls the item out of Shopping ads and free listings until it's fixed. Google is also strict about content: watermarks, promotional badges, borders, or generic placeholder graphics standing in for an actual product photo are policy violations that surface during the recurring crawls Google runs against every image_link in a feed. Because that crawl happens on an ongoing basis rather than once at upload, an image swapped out on the storefront — a CDN migration, a redesign that changes file paths — can silently break thousands of live listings if the feed isn't kept in sync with the site.
Google Merchant Center requires the URL to resolve to a JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF file, capped at 2,000 characters, with a minimum resolution of 100x100 pixels for most categories and 250x250 pixels for apparel — though Google recommends images considerably larger than that, since low-resolution photos get down-ranked on image quality even when they technically pass validation. Only one image_link is allowed per item; extra angles belong in additional_image_link instead. Meta Catalog uses the identical field name and comparable rules: a direct image URL, ideally at least 500x500 pixels, with its own limits on how much of the frame overlaid text or logos can cover. Neither platform will accept a video file in this field — that's what video_link exists for — and neither substitutes a category placeholder when the URL returns a 404.

image_link rarely stands alone in a feed audit — it's usually reviewed alongside additional_image_link, which fills out the gallery a shopper sees after clicking through, and video_link, which adds motion for the subset of products where a static photo undersells the item. Feed teams that treat all three as one visual-quality bucket, running the same URL-health and resolution checks across every image field on a recurring schedule, tend to catch broken links before Google's crawler does rather than after disapprovals start piling up. That kind of routine checking is also where image optimization pays off, since a properly optimized source image tends to satisfy every channel's resolution and file-size rules at once instead of needing separate exports per platform.
